High School Senior Recognition Program

The High School Seniors' Recognition Program was created in 1976, when Mrs. LaVerne Rand presented this idea to the members of the Beta Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
​
The program was designed to recognize students who demonstrated significant achievements while still in high school. Over 40 years later, the High School Seniors Recognition Program has continued honoring the ideals upon which it was founded. The program continues to recognize high school seniors for their academic achievements, extracurricular involvement, and community and civic engagement in addition to scholarship awards which became a part of the program in more recent years.

Student seminars focus on life after high school, whether that is attending college, joining the armed forces or entering the workforce. Seminars usually include college preparation, money management, etiquette, healthy living and mental & spiritual well-being.
ELIGIBILITY
Students must be graduating high school seniors (Class of 2023) at the time of the program. Participating seniors cannot be parents. Seniors may reside outside of Tarrant County.
Seniors may participate regardless of race, religion or national origin.

SCHOLARSHIPS / CASH AWARDS
Seniors are given the opportunity to earn money and scholarships for graduation and college expenses. For over 40 years, Beta Mu Omega and the Raising the Standard Foundation has awarded over $525,000 in scholarships, cash incentive awards, and gifts.

OBLIGATIONS
All seniors accepted into the program are required to attend all workshops, service projects and the Ceremony. Each Senior will have a minimum amount of funds to raise through activities such as sponsorships and fundraiser sales.
The 2021 virtual HSSR ceremony themed, "And Still We Rise" honored seven high school seniors for their achievements and community engagement. The honorees were awarded over $20,000 in combined scholarships and incentives that consisted of cash awards, gifts and prizes. We wish you all a bright future!!
The Raising the Standard Foundation has partnered with the Beta Mu Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and Fort Worth Housing Solutions to sponsor a girls’ mentoring program, the SILHOUETTES. The SILHOUETTES, a Beta Mu Omega initiative, is a girls' youth program that was organized over 10 years ago with a group of 10 girls, ages 4th – 8th grades by Ms. Beverly Butler. We currently have an average of 25 young ladies ranging from ages 10 - 17 that attend the monthly sessions. The goal of the program is to ignite within youth leaders a burning desire to be their very best in all endeavors and actions in their family, school, and community to help to make the world a better place to live.

Standard meetings are held the 1st Saturday of each month but can vary (no meeting in July).
*Some months will vary due to community activities, youth events or social/cultural outings.

We work closely with the group to ensure social and academic success and are dedicated to helping students in developing self-respect and grooming techniques, enhancing positive self-esteem, improving educational status, and increasing their awareness of career opportunities for their future via the Girls Math & Science AKAdemy and college tours.
The meetings are focused on topics such as health, internet dangers, etiquette, education and community service. In addition, the group attends cultural arts activities and take part in community service projects such as the MLK Parade, Voter Registration, “Sharing with Mankind” Day at Carter Metropolitan CME Church and the Community Food Bank Onsite Food Sorting and Packaging.
The group has been featured in the Around FWHA newsletter for their contributions and presence in the Fort Worth community.

Math & Science AKAdemy
Women make up only 28% of the workforce in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), and men greatly outnumber women majoring in most STEM fields in college.
Through the AKAdemy, girls have the opportunity to explore careers in math and science by participating in hands on workshops that focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The classes are facilitated by community volunteers, working professionals, and educators from various school districts that provide their time and resources as instructors. We provide the proper role models in hopes of generating the interest so that young girls will pursue more STEM related courses. It is up to us to provide hands-on experience and encouragement to our students in order to change the foot print of the current statistics.
